This "RECYCLING" environmental category, linked with all of the other categories helps sustain our environment. Students are encouraged to investigate recycling, reuse, and reduce by incorporating classroom subjects, content standards, real world information, and youth group badge or patch requirements. The integrated projects, partnership collaborations and community service help improve the community and world! A number of schools are using our reusable water bottles to cut down on plastic bottle use. These will be available for purchase online soon!

2009 ENVIRONMENT FAIR WINNING PROJECT

MRS. ANDERSON'S MALAWI PROJECT

Bathgate Elementary School

Capistrano Unified School District, Mission Viejo, CA

Mrs. Anderson's 4th Grade students featured their partnership with Malawi, Africa. The students are using their school recycling money to build a well for Nkhoma Village in Malawi, Africa (To date they have raised over $3,000). Last summer, the teacher, Dottie Anderson, traveled to the village in Africa, and representatives from Malawi had the opportunity to visit the school in Mission Viejo, CA to say "Zikomo" meaning "Thank you!" This class used a large map of Africa as the backdrop for their recycling presentation and showed how water bottles can be recycled to create clean water for others.

SORT - SAN ONOFRE RECYCLING TEAM

San Onofre School on Camp Pendleton Marine Corp Base

Fallbrook Union Elementary School District

Middle school students formed a recycling team to collect paper and plastic bottles from every K-8 classroom in the school. The team made weekly announcements to the entire school and gave awards to classrooms with the largest amount of recyclable items. The students recycled items in the lunch room and ink containers and paper from the school office. They also worked with the PTA to collect plastic bags. The students kept a record of the items recycled and the money raised from the project.
